Expat Lawyer in Chiang Mai

Foreigners who want to register for marriage in Thailand need to prepare the following documents:

• A copy of their passport, including the arrival card.
• An affidavit regarding their marital status, issued by their embassy or consulate in Thailand.
• A certified Thai translation of the affidavit.
• If there was an earlier marriage, an original death certificate or original divorce certificate, together with its certified Thai translations.

If either party is a Thai national, they will also need to provide the following documents:

• A copy of their national ID card.
• A copy of their house registration certificate.
• If divorced, a copy of their divorce certificate.
• If widowed, a copy of their deceased spouse’s death certificate.

All documents must be originals or certified copies.

Once the documents are in order, the couple can register their marriage at the local district office. They will need to bring two witnesses with them, who must be Thai nationals and at least 20 years old.

The marriage registration process is usually straightforward and takes about 30 minutes to complete. Once the marriage is registered, the couple will receive a marriage certificate.

Here are some additional tips for foreigners registering for marriage in Thailand:

• It is a good idea to start the process well in advance, as it may take some time to obtain all of the required documents.
• Make sure that all of the documents are in order and that the translations are accurate.
• Arrive at the district office early on the day of the registration, as there may be a queue.
• Bring two Thai witnesses with you.
• Be prepared to pay a small registration fee.
